One extended cruise through the Australian Coast was terminated in the wake of the fatal incident of an older female passenger who was left behind by the cruise liner on a distant island.

The elderly woman had been walking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but broke off from the group for a pause. The vessel sailed away leaving her and came back after some time after the personnel became aware the lady was not present.

A large-scale hunt discovered her person the following day.

Investigative bodies are examining the event, alongside law enforcement and the state coroner.

Head of the voyage organizer stated that passengers and personnel on the ship were informed that the continuation of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "unfortunate death and previous mechanical issues".

In a statement, he further stated that travelers would be given a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the passengers via private aircraft".

Regulatory bodies also issued an updated communication, and said they had "delivered a directive to the Master" preventing any new passengers from entering the vessel.

The official said that they would inspect the vessel in the port city upon its arrival.

Chronology of Incidents

The liner initially left the Australian port on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the journey at the point of the senior passenger's passing. Lizard Island was the opening port on the journey.

Passengers on the vessel - who typically pay substantial amounts of currency to join the expedition - were ferried there for a shore visit with the option of trekking or snorkeling.

Family Reaction

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her family was "surprised and grieved that the ship left Lizard Island after an scheduled outing without my mother".

In her statement, she characterized her parent as an "energetic elderly person" who was a participant of a bushwalking group.

"From the little details we have been informed, it appears that there was a lapse of responsibility and common sense," she mentioned.

She continued that she hoped the examination would be able to pinpoint what "the organization should have undertaken that might have protected Mother's life".

"We understand from the investigators that it was a very hot afternoon, and she took sick on the uphill trek," she revealed.

"Officials suggested her to go back, alone. Then the vessel departed, seemingly without conducting a headcount.

"At some stage in that sequence, or not long after, she passed away, by herself."

Operator Response

Through an announcement, the Chief Executive confirmed that the organization was "cooperating fully with authorities to aid their inquiry".

He mentioned that the company was "deeply sorry that this has transpired" and had offered its full support to the family.

Shipping Sector Standards

The vessel accommodates up to one hundred twenty guests with forty-six staff, according to corporate details. It was specially constructed to reach distant areas of the Australian coastline and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - compact vessels used to take travelers on land visits.

Incidents such as this are rare, and liners have systems to document which travelers are embarking or getting off, according to travel authorities.

"Leaving covertly or [back] on the ship really isn't an option," one expert commented.

Vessel operators consider these methods very seriously and have "clever tech in place to stop such occurrences from occurring," the specialist added.

"This is probably a surprising - and tragic - isolated incident."
