Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The mission was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
